Power Tools Can Fix Up Your Home For Resell

Trying to sell your home can be scary, especially when the housing market is in such turmoil. But, there are a few things you can do on your own to improve the value of your home and make it a more attractive purchase. One of the most important things you can do is to fix up anything that is worn-out or run-down because, while some people appreciate and see potential in a fixer-upper, most people want a house that is move-in ready. To do this, you will have to get up close and personal with some power tools.

Some basic power tools you may need include a belt sander, an electric drill and a circular saw. Depending on the extent of the repairs and improvements, you may need more sophisticated machines like a table saw or Miter saw.

Key areas that buyers want to see in good shape are the kitchen, the master bedroom and master bathroom. These particular rooms can make or break a deal so take a look around and see what needs to be done. Maybe the cabinets are looking a little worn in the kitchen. Some work with a belt sander followed by new stain can make the kitchen look like new. Crown molding is a great touch to the bedroom and potential buyers notice details like this. Using a Miter saw, you can cut the molding at perfect angles to fit around the room. A little paint or stain on the trim and the master bedroom has new character. Using an electric drill, add some shelving to the closet or update what’s there so the potential buyer can envision all of their clothes and shoes inside.

These are fairly simple examples of some of the things you can do with power tools to spruce up your house for resell. Many of the hand-held power tools are pretty inexpensive and good to have on hand for emergency projects so they make a great investment. The bigger machines are more expensive and if you think you won’t ever use it again, home improvement stores may rent what you are looking for or see if you can borrow one from a friend (you may also recruit some help!). But, whether you buy, rent or borrow, there is no doubt power tools make things faster and easier. Just remember to follow the safety guidelines and read the manual for proper use of the equipment.

You may wonder why go to all this trouble if you’re selling your house anyway and the answer is simple-you want to sell the house. The market is flooded with foreclosure homes in a various degrees of disrepair, but at a great deal. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of using power tools, they can pay-off big for you in the end. And, even though you’re going to work for someone else, there is still a sense of accomplishment when the job is finished. So get started and make your home more attractive than the competition by doing the work for the potential buyer.

Safety Tips for Common Power Tools

When using power tools, safety is the most important thing to consider. Using power tools correctly and safely will ensure the safety of you and anyone else around you. Different power tools gave different procedures to make sure that they are operating safely.

The router is a great tool for shaping wood quickly and cleanly. However, there are several things to keep in mind when using a router. Test out the router on a piece of scrap metal to make sure that it is of the proper depth. If the router is too deep or not deep enough, you will ruin the wood, and potentially harm yourself. Be sure to keep the bit away from the wood when you first start the router. When the router comes up to speed, firmly grip the handle and move the bit slowly and carefully into the object you are working on.

Reciprocating saws are used for cutting all kinds of materials, renovating and dismantling structures, and opening up walls. Naturally, this heavy-duty tool should be used with precaution. Holding the reciprocating saw with both hands when using it is a must. It is very powerful and has the ability to pull very hard on the user. The blades for this type of saw range from 6 inches to 12 inches. The blades can break, so have extras, and be careful with the blades when you are finished with the saw because the blades heat up tremendously while being used.

The power miter saw is also called a chop saw. It is used to make crisp, quick, and accurate cuts. It is often used on carpentry or picture framing. While in use, this saw should be raised off of the ground (this can be done with two-by-fours). It should be raised because the chips of wood that fall out of the machine can pile up and clog it if it is not elevated. Check the blade guard of the saw, and be sure to be cutting on a sturdy surface.

Finally, there are some general safety tips that can be applied to all power tools. Always wear goggles. This tip cannot be stressed enough. Eye injuries are very common when working with power tools, so always protect your eyes. Read all instructions thoroughly. All power tools have their little quirks. Read the instructions and learn the proper way to use the power tool. Follow warning labels. This may seem like a simple safety tip, but many people ignore warnings (for example: they stand on the very top of the ladder, and fall over). Finally, be very careful and eliminate distractions whenever possible. Following these few tips should help you be safer when using any kind of power tool.

Add To Your Collection Of Power Tools

If you are a committed DIY enthusiast, having access to a broad selection of power tools is not just important, it is essential. When looking to add to your equipment collection, there may be very few tools that you do not currently own. Most guys who enjoy do-it-yourself projects would already have a power drill, circular saw, and reciprocating saw stored in their workshop.

One piece that you may be missing is an oscillating multi-tool. Though this is not the largest or most powerful tool available, it is a product that can make many jobs and projects a lot easier to complete.

An oscillating tool features a slender and long body, with a head that can accept a variety of attachments designed for different tasks such as grinding, sanding, grout removal, scraping, and wood cutting. The beauty of this small yet versatile tool is that the accessory oscillates at a speed which does not result in a massive dust cloud being formed. It should be thought of as the DIY equivalent to a surgeon’s scalpel.

This compact, yet versatile, product is a relatively new concept. In fact, it is only in the last few years that most major tool manufacturers have started to offer their own designs. What was once an obscure power tool has quickly become a must-have gadget for tradesmen and DIY aficionados. Once you have this portable multi-tool added to your collection, you will soon start to wonder how you ever managed to get by without it.

When it comes to actually choosing a model, there are a number of considerations you should think about. Most users prefer the corded designs, unless a cordless version is necessary for a job that is already being planned. It can be frustrating having to swap or recharge batteries on a frequent basis especially when grinding or sanding.

The variety of attachments available is another important factor, some designs come with only two or three different heads whereas other have upwards of six. Consider what type of tasks you will mostly need the tool for. If regularly working in confined spaces, choose a model that comes with dust collection support.

The cost of most hand-held oscillating multi-tools is approximately one hundred to two hundred dollars. As when buying any equipment, opt for a manufacturer that has a good reputation and who provides an extensive warranty. You can also check out the latest reviews online to discover the opinions of other do-it-yourself enthusiasts.

In most cases its best to purchase used power tools made by manufacturers you know or tool brands you’ve had good experiences with than to purchase brand new tools that are cheaper but made by little known or inferior companies. Do a little online sleuthing by searching the name of the tool you’re interested in with the word “review” at the end (ie. Skil cordless saw review) The top brand names make better products, and therefore often outlast and outperform lower priced-and lower quality-brands. New cheap tools aren’t great deals if you have to continually replace or repair them!

You should also know the difference between USED, RECONDITIONED, and REFURBISHED power tools. Many people assume all of these terms mean about the same thing, but they do not!

USED power tools are those which have been used by someone else and probably have not been serviced by a professional. If you know what you’re doing, go ahead and make the purchase, but try to get a return agreement of some kind. Remember; let the buyer beware. You should always know what that particular tool sells for brand new, as used tools can range from 10% to 85% of original cost, depending on the condition, appearance, accessories and other factors. And familiarize yourself with anything else that may have been included in the box with a new purchase.

RECONDITIONED power tools refers to tools which have been bought in quantity by a company that makes its money “fixing up” these tools to working order. Most times they also touch up obvious cosmetic flaws and generally bring these tools up to much better visual appearance. You are clearly getting used goods when you purchase reconditioned but many times you’ll get a limited warranty or an extended return policy. Often these will have more than enough life left to do the job for you for many years.

REFURBISHED power tools are those that have been restored to functional order by their original manufacturers. These often come with near-new warranties to protect against breakdowns and malfunctions. These are generally a much safer option than used or reconditioned. Generally, the manufacturers consider these-since they carry the original manufacturer’s name-to project similar trust as their new tools.

Buying used is usually a gamble, but if you do your homework, consider the tool’s condition and age (if possible), know what parts and accessories the tool-brand new-comes with and whether or not it still has an owner’s manual you’ll have an advantage. The more info you have, the more negotiating power you have. You should also factor in an increase in price for tools that are highly sought after and may be short in supply at the time.

The Dangers of Power Tools and Causes of Binding

We often hear of the dangers of power tools, but we may not clearly understand the little things that lead up to power tool accidents. All power tools are potentially dangerous given the right circumstances – or should I say wrong circumstances. However, some are obviously more dangerous than others. The more dangerous ones include pneumatic tools such as nail guns, table saws, chain saws, and circular saws.

Why do Circular Saws Bind and How can it be Prevented?

Circular saws in particular can be very dangerous to the DIYer or home-owner. Many people I know think the guard that slides down around the blade is annoying, and I agree. Because of this people tend to either remove these guards or tape or wire them up in a semi-permanent out-of-way position. The danger here is obvious, in that if the saw were to kick back due to binding or similar, you could have a serious accident.

Binding happens when the material being cut pinches the blade from either side as it’s passing through. This is the cause for many accidents related to circular saws, and can actually be avoided very easily. Never attempt to cut through a board that’s not supported sufficiently close to the target cut-line. Why? As the board is cut, its ability to hold itself up in a bridging position is taken away.

The board then begins sagging under its own weight, as well as that of the circular saw, causing the two upper corners of the board to create friction with the saw blade. As more and more of the board is cut, this friction increases, until you have yourself a full-blown binding on your hands. If the binding is sudden, you will most likely get a dangerous kickback, whereas if it’s a slower process, you may just get a strained motor and a lot of smoke.

You don’t want either. An experienced carpenter can usually avoid cases where binding may occur by simply taking away the possibility of downward movement immediately beneath the target cut-line. You can also play it safe by even allowing the presence of a small upward force by supporting the board close to the target cut-line, and letting an appropriate amount overhang on the two ends.

Another way a saw blade can bind is when you’re not firmly holding down the board being cut. By allowing the board to move forward along with the circular saw – even slightly – you can inadvertently allow the board to begin “folding” at the kerf, pinching the rear-end of the saw blade. And you should know that, as with the form of binding I covered earlier, the “bending” of the board that causes the bind is often hardly noticeable with the naked eye.

Power Tool Injuries Stats

We may have heard it said that it’s the more experienced or veteran carpenters that often suffer the worst injuries. This is because as you become more accustomed to a particular routine, you let your guard down and often get careless. If the previous sentence sounds familiar to you, watch out – it’s only a matter of time before an accident will happen. I’m listing some statistics for information’s sake below, (per year, in the US):

Power Nailers – 37,000 to ER

Chain Saws – 36,000 to ER

Table Saws – 29,000 to ER

Snow Blowers – 5,700 to ER

Circular Saws – 10,600 to ER

Riding Lawnmowers – 37,000 to ER

Power Drills – 5,800 to ER

Backhoes – 38 deaths a year

Air Compressors – 2,400 injuries a year

Wood Chippers – 3 deaths a year

As you can see, these are no small numbers. And we’re not talking about little cuts and grazes here either! These are mostly limited to reported cases that put patients into the ER. Power tools with tremendous and limb-lobbing mechanical power are becoming more and more available to folks who, several decades ago, wouldn’t dream of owning such a tool. It follows that many who purchase these tools often don’t take the necessary safety precautions.

Due to their popularity, there are those who may think they know how to operate high-powered tools safely but because they have only the second-hand teacher of observation and maybe some limited experience, they run the risk of injury that could have otherwise been prevented by being better educated or informed. In conclusion, power tools may seem harmless enough, and granted, some are very small and even cute, but they are still very dangerous if not used with care.

How to Keep Safe Using Power Tools

For anyone using power tools having the correct safety equipment and being aware of safety procedures when using power tools is important. Power tools are very dangerous if you are not aware of the safety measures involved when using them. You need to be focused when using power tools, as unlike hand tools power tools can keep going when you don’t want them to. Here are some essential factors beginners and general users need to take into account.

The first thing to sort out is to firstly carry a first aid kit with you when working with power tools. It is essential in your workshop to have one close by as you are bound to injure yourself in some way and even if it is something like a cut it is best to have first aid close by.

You should keep your eyes safe by wearing protective eye gear. Goggles are important to prevent any loose dust or debris damaging your eyes. This debris usually comes at you fast and so sawdust from wood can be flung directly into your eye and in some cases can be permanently lodged there. That is why goggles are an important piece of safety equipment you should wear when working with these types of tools.

Ears also need protecting when using loud noisey tools. The sound of power tools, especially notoriously loud ones like drills, can seriously damage your hearing if you are right next to them and are not wearing any protective foam ear plugs. These ear plugs do not cost very much and should be worn to reduce high decibel levels from noisy tools.

A good piece of equipment to protect you from flying debris is a particle mask. This is particularly good to stop you inhaling the dust that comes from cutting wood. The particle mask is also important as it prevents dust from reaching your nose or going into your mouth and the mask should filter any debris you may inhale.

Protective gloves are also a must. Make sure too there is no clothing you are wearing that could potentially get caught in the equipment. The need to protect your fingers is crucial as there are many common accidents where people have accidentally cut their finger off due to a distraction or a lack of concentration. You also need to protect fingers by making sure they are in no contact with any blades, and this can be done by making sure the blades are no longer active when finished. This can also be helped by leaving on safety control settings that some power tools have.

There are other simple ways to keep safe using power tools. Wearing long sleeved shirts can protect arms and close tied shoes that could protect against any falling heavy objects. You should have a phone handy should you have an accident and need to go to hospital. Another essential tip is to make sure that you actually spend time learning how to use the equipment. It will not hurt to take time out and read the instructions on how to use each piece of equipment. For general safety precautions make sure tools are put away safely and nothing is left sticking out or loose on the floor.

These essential tips and tools will keep you safe when working. By protecting eyes, ears, face, having first aid close by, wearing gloves and being aware of how to use the power tool effectively you can feel safer when using power tools.

Lengthening The Life of Your Batteries With Power Tool Battery Reconditioning

Power tools are important for a number of industries and they are mainly used for construction purposes. However, DIYs and handy individuals who do their own home projects such as cutting, grinding, shaping, drilling, polishing or painting around the house may also find them quite useful. If you’re fond of doing DIY projects at home, then having a power tool inside your tool box is an extreme essential.

While most stationary tools are powered by electric motors or compressed air, portable and smaller tools usually make use of batteries. Because it relies on batteries to work, your tool is only as good as the life of your battery. Once your battery is dead, your power tool is rendered useless until you end up replacing it. Naturally, since these tools make use of rechargeable NiCad (nickel cadmium) batteries, then the lifespan of the battery is substantially longer than the conventional ones. But, these rechargeable batteries also have their own life spans, and will need to be replaced at a certain point in time.

How To Prolong The Life Of Your Power Tool Batteries
While power tool batteries can be recharged and used over and over again, they also have a set lifespan and can only last up to a number of discharges and recharges. However, there are some methods that you can try in order to make the battery’s life last longer allowing you to get more for your money.

Power Tool Battery Reconditioning Lengthens The Battery Lifespan
One easy way to increase the lifespan of your power tool battery is to recondition it regularly. An easy reconditioning process involves fully discharging the battery and recharging it again. It is pretty simple considering the fact that all you have to do is fully charge the battery. Then, you simply have to turn the tool on and run it until it completely dies out. Then, you should once again charge the battery and repeat the process once again.

Doing this process once a month is guaranteed to increase the lifespan of your battery, and improve its working capacity. Should you notice any problems with your battery in terms of working condition or capacity, then the battery might either be damaged or may have actually reached the end of its lifespan and may already need to be replaced.

Other Methods of Power Tool Battery Reconditioning

This easy process of power tool battery reconditioning is just one method of improving your battery’s life span. There are other reconditioning methods such as using desulfators or nano-pulsers in order to eliminate crystal sulfation. These other methods of recharging and reconditioning batteries work just as well, however, the method mentioned above is one of the easiest ways to do so and can be done on a monthly basis as a precautionary measure. Don’t forget to do this on a monthly basis and increase the lifespan and working capacity of your battery.

Importance of Power Tools in Our Life

When you have a job at hand and you are given a power tool to help you do it, you will find that work progresses a lot more quickly. Yes, tools make life easier because they ease the work man has to do with his own hands. Not only do power tools help you finish a job in a fraction of the time you would have taken if you attempted to do it without them, it also produces better results.

From the beginning of time, man has used tools to make life easier to live. The first tool man used perhaps was the stone. He used it to hunt animals, cut meat and most importantly, light a fire. With time, man started producing more improved tools. And today, tools powered by electricity, battery, air compressor, gas, etc. are making work easier for us.

Today, tools are a part of almost every household. Every home needs a screw to be fixed or some woodworking to be done. If you are a professional craftsman, woodworker or a tradesman, you will need tools even more as they are crucial to earn your living.

Modern tools sell all over the world. Makita, Bosch, Dremel, etc. are renowned brands that manufacture and sell modern tools all over the world. While shopping for modern tools, choose tools that are practical, light- weight, long- lasting and come with a guarantee. Building and repairing things become fun when you have the right tools to go with it. I would recommend you to find some websites which can give you proper information regarding power tools.

Power Tool Battery Reconditioning Is Easy

Is the battery of your power tool beginning to show signs of dying out, or has it gone completely dead? Whichever is the case, you may be thinking of purchasing new batteries for your tools. But, have you seen the battery prices lately? It really makes you want to just buy a new tool instead. Fortunately, there is still a more affordable option, and that is battery reconditioning.

Power tools usually employ rechargeable nickel cadmium (NiCad) batteries. These batteries can be recharged several times before they begin to die out. The good thing is that this type of battery can still be reconditioned even when it has died out, and its usefulness can be restored. It is also advisable to recondition your batteries once each month for maintenance purposes, and every time they are in storage for extended periods to prevent the battery from going into deep discharge.

Reconditioning a battery is a very easy DIY project. In fact, after reading through the following instructions on how to recondition a power tool battery, you will be amazed at just how easy it is. There are just two things you need when reconditioning a NiCad battery: a battery charger and an electrical outlet. Once you have these two things prepared, here’s how you can get your battery back in shape.

Let the power tool run through normal operation until the battery is completely discharged. For example, if the unit is a drill, run it until the drill does not turn anymore. Be sure to let the tool run without a load (e.g. run the drill without actually drilling into anything). Once the tool’s battery has gone completely dead, plug the power tool battery charger into an electrical outlet and then charge the power tool battery until it regains full capacity.

As soon as the battery has been fully charged, run the power tool again to check the battery’s capacity. If you notice that it has not yet returned to full working capacity, you may have to repeat the entire power tool battery reconditioning process once or twice. However, if you notice that the battery’s performance has improved as compared to when it has not gone through the reconditioning process, it is best to wait a month before reconditioning it again. Too much discharging and recharging may cause undue strain on the batteries. If your batteries continue to deteriorate even after monthly reconditioning, it may already have run through its lifespan and that is when buying a replacement becomes the best option.

Of course, the process described above is just one way to recondition power tool batteries. There are also more detailed and complicated reconditioning processes that you can choose from. You may want to check if your battery’s manual contains instructions on how to properly recondition it. If the battery’s casing is cracked, however, it is best to throw it away and just buy a replacement battery. Before your power tool battery has died out, the best thing you can do is to take proper care of it such that you are able to optimize its lifespan.

Different Types of Power Tools

Power tools are tools used for drilling, cutting, shaping and many other industrial actions that can be powered by a steam engine, an electric motor or even natural power sources. Power tools can be stationary or portable. Stationary tools are the large machines that cannot be easily moved, while the portable ones can easily be moved and can be held by hand.

The tools can further be divided into those with a power cord and those without. Cordless are the ones that are powered by batteries. They are more easy to handle because they are light and do not need an external power source. The batteries used are rechargeable. Cordless tools may include pruning shears, hand held vacuums, trim saw, planer and the jig saw. The first cordless tool was the electric screw driver that used an alkaline flash battery.

There are different types of power tools. One of these is the drillers, which are used in cutting holes very fast. It uses motor to turn. They are sometimes used as sanders. If you can use adapters on the drills, you can use them to drive screws and bolts too.

Sanders are not used to smoothen a rough surface. Some of them include mouse sanders, belt sanders and drum sanders. They come in different shapes and sizes and make the work of smoothening easier. Joiners are also a type of power tools that joins two pieces of wood cut into thin slots.

A tool that uses a combustion engine or an electric motor to operate is the chain saw. They are easily portable and are mainly used to cut trees. Saws are on of the most dangerous to use because of the sharp blades. They should therefore be used with care.

Pink Power Tools, an Expression for Women Empowerment

It’s true: during these modern times, chivalry is dead. Gone are the days when women have to rely on fathers and husbands at all times on what to do and what not to do. Women are no longer limited to do house work. Gardening, construction, fixes, mechanical work and crafts– these are some of the things women can do with no help from our male counterparts.

On the other hand, more hardware stores are slow in recognizing this new power and control modern women now have. When we go to our local hardware stores and retail, most of the tools are only available in generic and masculine designs. These tools are made too big or too heavy for women to use. It’s important for women to have power tools of their own. Specifically, tools with the color that celebrates femininity, or pink tools.

Some manufacturers are now creating tools for female customers. Pink tool kit composes of many versatile and handy tools for minor home improvement projects. The kit is a tidy and multi-purpose kit of tools. It comes in pink. The kit is a durable carrying case that is easy to carry and lightweight, so that the tools are available for use anytime, anywhere. Tools inside vary from kit to kit, but it often includes a hammer, electrical tape, scissors, hammer, utility knife, putty knife, pliers, wrenches, screwdriver and maybe a small drill.

Don’t be fooled by the color, for the pink power tools packs as much power as men’s tools often sold in hardware stores. They are much more lightweight and considerably smaller to fit women’s hands. These tools are perfect for light and medium duty home projects, fixes and repairs. Pink tools are certainly cute and very female. Plus, it has one hidden advantage too: you are sure that the guys won’t certainly try to walk off with it.

You are not only helping yourself by buying pink power tools-but you are also helping others, too. The power tool kit supports breast cancer awareness and a 10% portion of the proceeds will go to the breast cancer awareness initiative.

Maintenance For Power Tools: What Should Be Addressed

No matter if you’re a professional or an amateur handyman, you need to keep your power tools in shape. While safety is a prime concern when such tools are in use, another way to protect yourself and get the best job as possible done is by always keeping your tools in good condition. This may be as easy as replacing older bits and blades to watching the alignment of the tool over time.

Sharpness is one quality that makes or breaks nearly all power tools. Blades and bits that aren’t sharp enough won’t give a clean cut and will result in a poorly-done job. Maintaining the sharpness of nearly all tools is important, particularly for all saws and various specialized woodworking tools. Some saws, for example, should have their blades professionally sharpened regularly, while other blades and bits are essentially disposable and should be replaced when dull or damaged.

Cleanliness is important for both a workstation and tools. But, even with a clean workstation, the power tools may not be as clean as you think. Generally concerning blades and bits, the first part to cleaning any power tools is removing debris, be it bits or a sticky residue from cutting wood. These build up over time and cause a blade to not perform as well. A pitch and resin remover kit, in this case, is ideal for removing any residue from blades and bits.

Other tools are stationary but still need to be clean. If a blade, for example, is part of a stationary tool, such as a table saw, the blade may be more susceptible to corrosion. In this case, a light lubricant should be added to such surfaces.

In other instances, certain parts may need to be replaced on your power tools for them to continue operating. Tools with belts or tires need one of these parts replaced at some point, preferably before the rubber part starts to crack or loses flexibility.
